Undergradute degrees

Accepted Higher School Certificates for undergraduate programs

High School Diploma, Higher Secondary School Certificate, General Certificates of Secondary Education (GCSE), Higher Secondary Certificate, Upper Secondary /Secondary School/ High School/ Senior High School Leaving Certificate, Testimonial, Secondary Education Certificate, Senior School Certificate, Matriculation Examination Certificate, SAT , WAEC , WASSCE , NECO , JAMB, BACCALAUREATE.

Documents Required for Undergraduate Application

  • Photocopies of Higher Secondary School Certificate and transcript (mark sheets).
  • One passport-sized photograph
  • Photocopy of the passport (relevant page)
  • A copy of proof of English Proficiency if any

Note: English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English

Transfer student applications or associate degree holders

Students who are hold an Associate Degree or a National Diploma can apply as a transfer student to the Bachelor Degree programs of the Eastern Mediterranean University.

The requirements for transfer applications to the Eastern Mediterranean University are as follows.

  • Transfer applications should be to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th semesters. Associate Degree or National Diploma holders generally start from the 5th semester.
  • Student should not have been dismissed from a University,
  • All required modules should have been completed from previous classes.
  • CGPA should be minimum 2.00 out of 4.00 or the equivalent.

  • Photocopies of Higher Secondary School Certificate / Diploma and Associate Degree or a National Diploma
  • Academic record / mark sheets (transcript)
  • Short course descriptions
  • Passport copy
  • One photograph

Note: English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English.

Master & Phd Degree

Prospective applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree for Master’s programs and also meet departmental admission requirements.

Applicants for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs must possess a master’s degree.

For Master’s program with thesis and PhD programs, the Turkish Republic citizens must have a program relevant valid ALES score of a minimum of 55. GRE (mathematical) = 610 or GMAT= 450 are equivalent to ALES=55.

A list of documents needed for application is given below:

  1. An official transcript of all university-level (Bachelor / Master) courses taken. A comparative mark/grade table if CGPA on the transcript is not out of 4.00.
  2. Attested photocopies of diplomas received from a university or equivalent institutions (i.e. 4 years study bachelor degree). English translations of these documents are necessary if they are in any language other than English.
  3. Documentation of scores received for English and academic proficiency exams/tests. This is not valid for the programs in which the medium of instruction is Turkish. Native speakers should indicate the place of birth and citizenship. All others should provide documents of any one of the below given English Proficiency Tests.
  4. Three letters of reference (not required for EMU graduates).
  5. Documents
    1. Give details of any grant/scholarships that you have already been awarded (valid for your studentship at EMU) (add documents).
    2. Give details of any application(s) for a grant/scholarship that you have made (add documents).
    3. Statement of Purpose / Intention (Please submit on a separate sheet: Your purpose in applying to the program chosen, explaining your motivation as well as the areas of specialization which would be of interest to you within the discipline).
    4. A photocopy of your passport or I.D. card.
    5. A passport-sized (approx. 6 cm x 5 cm) photographs.
    6. Program specific documents: Architecture (Ph.D. & Master): Portfolio.
    7. Proposal (for PhD program applications)

Transfer Application

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), being the only state university in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), with its highly developed infrastructure, prominent academic staff members, quality programs in English/ Turkish language, international accreditations, an international teaching context, and a diploma recognized throughout the world would like to invite you to study at EMU. 

Students who were given admission to University and registered may submit their course exemption request to Academic Department Chair’s office together with official transcript, course descriptions and termination letter. Course exemption application must be done until the end of the semester in which the student initially registered for a program course.

Graduate Programs course exemption evaluation is done according to the following criteria:  

  1. Courses should not be assessed towards a diploma and that their equivalences can be proven.
  2. Previously taken courses that are exempted by the registered program should have “B” as the minimum grade and should be taken within five academic years preceding the semester of the graduate program registration in EMU.
  3. Total credits of exempted courses transferred to the registered program can only be equivalent to half of the credits necessary to complete the program (For example, if the program consists 7 courses, exemption can be given to at most 3 courses).

Out of the previously taken credit courses that are transferred to the new program, a semester is deducted from the student’s total study period for every three exempted credit courses, on the condition that the total period of study is not less than the minimum study period specified in Regulations for Graduate Studies and Examinations

English Language Requirement

For master’s programs that are taught in English and all PhD programs (in English and Turkish), evidence of English language ability is required. If you do not have a valid English language qualification that meets the EMU requirements presented in the table below, your level will be assessed by examination at EMU.

Based on this assessment, one of the following will apply:

  • you will be exempt from the English Language Support Program and begin your postgraduate study directly;
  • you will study English courses together with graduate program courses;
  • you will study intensive English courses first (with no graduate program courses) before you start your graduate program.

The table below shows the English Language Tests recognized by EMU and the minimum scores required for exemption from English language courses. However, some graduate programs such as the Department of English Language Teaching (ELT) apply a higher scale regarding English language exemption. Prospective students are advised to contact the relevant academic department for further additional rules and regulations

FLEPS: Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School

According to a decision taken by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) on 14.02.2014, IELTS test scores cannot be used for exemption by Turkish citizens.  

Other Special Conditions

    1. Candidates who have graduated from an EMU English medium undergraduate program and who apply for another English medium master’s or doctoral degree program will take English Proficiency exam Level II. In this case, students may take English support courses (one or two semesters) besides graduate program courses if they cannot pass the exam.
    2. Candidates who have graduated from an EMU English medium postgraduate program within the last two years and who apply for another English medium master’s or doctoral degree program do not need to submit evidence of English language ability and are exempt from all English language courses.
    3. EMU Proficiency Test scores and completed English language courses are valid for three years and can be transferred to other EMU graduate degree programs within this period.
    4. Applicants who are citizens of countries where the official language is English are exempt from English language courses on condition that they obtained their undergraduate or graduate degrees from an English-medium higher education institution.
    5. Applicants who are not citizens of countries where the official language is English but have obtained their undergraduate degrees from an English medium institution of higher education in a country where the official language is English are exempt from the English language test.
    6. Applicants who are not citizens of countries where the official language is English but have obtained their postgraduate degree from an English medium institution of higher education in a country where the official language is English are exempt from the English language test if they apply within two years of their graduation.
    7. Applicants who are not citizens of countries where the official language is English but have obtained their undergraduate or postgraduate degree from an English medium institution of higher education will take English Proficiency exam Level 2. In this case students may take English support courses (one or two semesters) besides graduate program courses if they cannot pass the exam. 
    8. For programs where the language of instruction is not English, English language requirements are determined by the Institute Board. 

Turkish Language Requirement

International candidates applying for the Turkish-medium postgraduate/doctoral programs offered by Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) are required to submit a document certifying their Turkish level in an internationally recognized exam, which is also recognised by the Eastern Mediterranean University. The Turkish proficiency level of applicants failing to present a valid document is determined by the results of the Turkish Language Test administered by EMU Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School.

The table below illustrates Turkish Language Exams either administered by EMU Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School (FLEPS) or recognised by EMU, and base scores required for exemptions from Turkish Language Courses.

Applicants failing to provide a Turkish language exam document take the Turkish Language Exam administered by the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School. Those who have managed to obtain the minimum score determined by the Institute Board are found adequate to start their studies in postgraduate programs.

Applicants not meeting the proficiency requirements may start their studies at the  postgraduate programs, on the condition that they register for the Turkish Language Support Program corresponding with their level of Turkish determined by the Turkish Language Exam administered by the Foreign Languages and English Preparatory School. Other Special Conditions for Turkish Proficiency

1. Candidates who have graduated from one of the Turkish-medium postgraduate programs of the Eastern Mediterranean University and applied for another Turkish- medium postgraduate or doctoral degree program are exempted from the Turkish Language Proficiency Exam requirement, on the condition that they apply within two years after their graduation.

2. No Turkish language test requirement is sought for applicants who have been re-admitted to postgraduate programs, on the condition that they were registered for a Turkish medium postgraduate program in Eastern Mediterranean University within the last two years from their application date to the program and that they submit a document certifying that they possess the minimum score specified for the semester of application to the postgraduate program of readmission.

3. No Turkish language test requirement is sought for applicants who are citizens of  countries with Turkish not the official language and at the same time, who have obtained their postgraduate degrees from a Turkish-medium institution of higher education in a country with Turkish as the official language, on the condition that they apply within two years following their graduation.

4. No Turkish language test requirement is sought for applicants who are citizens of countries with Turkish not the official language but who have obtained their undergraduate degrees from a Turkish-medium institution of higher education in a country with Turkish as the official language.
